The Color-Block Trend: How To Dress Colorfully

The Color-block trend has always been a popular one for both men and women. Recently designers experimented with new combinations of color with dazzling results. Stella McCartney, Christian Dior, Michael Kors, Emporio Armani and a host of others all incorporated a bevy of color-blocked looks in their collections.

The Color-Block Trend For Women

The easiest and most popular of the color-blocking combinations is black and white. This is one of the key trends this year and was expanded on by including all manner of geometric, floral and abstract prints for both men and women. Another easy way to pull off this trend is by simply mixing two or more contrasting pieces, like a knit top and colored denim jeans for a cleaner, simpler version of this look. You can take some of the color inspiration from color-blocked styles like those pictured above, and make your own with pieces that mimic these colors.

This season there seems to be an emphasis on retro 70’s inspired color combinations. These colorways have been updated with bright pop or neon colors to make them more current and appealing than some of their more muted 70’s versions. Color blocking can now be found in every item imaginable.

Accessories are especially popular and there is a great assorment of stylish color-blocked styles in shoes, bags and multi-colored bangles.

The Color-Block Trend For Men

In past seasons, the majority of color-blocked looks were more or less consistent. Key combinations rarely changed but that is no longer true. The bright and colorful Spring season was a breakout season for designers as they mixed unexpected colors for a new twist on this theme. Orange, Purple and Pink were key colors, either combined together or with other new and off-beat shades.

Tonal combinations also proved popular, especially in menswear where the colors are more subdued. Men's combinations usually have a dark color such as Black or Navy that grounds the brighter colors in the mix. This trend also works well with the bold stripe trend that also is important this season and is a natural for any man's wardrobe.
